Key questions you must ask any real estate agent

Choosing the right agent makes all of the difference when buying or selling your home.  It’s important to interview several agents to ensure that you find the one who best fits your needs. Be sure to ask questions that cover the following categories:

  1. Experience:  Length of time the agent has been working in residential real estate and your specific area.  You should also ask about the number of homes they’ve sold in the last year, as well as whether or not they specialize in buyers or sellers.  How are their negotiating skills when dealing with multiple offer scenarios?
  2. Process:  How will they help you?  If you’re listing a property, what marketing systems and approaches will they use to sell your house.  If you’re buying a home, do they have access to “pocket listings” or other properties that might be available, but not on the MLS.
  3. Costs:  What is the agent’s commission, and what costs can you expect during the process.  If you’re listing a property, will the agent expect you to stage it or make certain home repairs/improvements.
  4. Personality/Philosophy:  Do your personalities mesh?  Is a “shark” the best agent for you or would you prefer to work with someone who is more nurturing?
